August 4, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a Minneapolis orthodontics practice, reminds parents to call now to schedule one last orthodontic check-up for their children before school starts.
Back to school appointments tend to book quickly as parents scramble to squeeze in one last summer appointment so their children don’t have to miss school for their check-up, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who opened Cosmopolitan Orthodontics in June. Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a Minneapolis, MN orthodontist, is the orthodontist on staff there.
This also is the time of year when parents of athletes need to purchase new mouth guards.
“Last year’s mouth guard won’t work for a growing child,” said Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis braces specialist. “Just as they outgrow shoes and uniforms, children’s jaws grow and mouth guards must be replaced.”
It is important for a mouth guard to fit securely in the mouth to prevent injury. An orthodontist or dentist can check the fit of children’s mouth guards if they have been purchased from a sporting goods store. Or, if parents prefer a custom-fitted mouth guard, Cosmopolitan Orthodontics can take impressions and have one made within a week, Eisenhuth said.
“A custom-fitted mouth guard fabricated by us will provide athletes with the protection they need,” she said. “We also ensure that the fit is comfortable and the patient is able to breathe and speak easily when wearing the appliance.”
When a mouth guard is made specifically for an individual patient, factors such as orthodontic appliances and erupting, loose or missing teeth can be taken into consideration, she said. If the athlete has incurred dental trauma in the past and there are areas of the mouth that need additional protection, that issue can be addressed.
A custom mouth guard is made over the course of two visits. Eisenhuth takes an impression of the mouth at the first appointment to use in creating the mouth guard. The mouth guard is properly fitted at the second appointment, which usually is a week later.
Students who participate in soccer, hockey, karate, football, lacrosse, basketball or any type of sport where there is a possibility of being hit in the mouth should wear a mouth guard, Eisenhuth said.

St. Paul Orthodontics Practice Treats with iBraces
August 4, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – You may already know about iPods, iTunes and iPhones, but have you heard of iBraces?
While this technological advancement won’t enable you to text your friends or play your favorite songs, iBraces can help you achieve a great smile, said St. Paul Minnesota Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.
iBraces are available at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a Lakeville practice that Eisenhuth opened in June. Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a St. Paul braces expert, is the orthodontist on staff there.
iBraces are lingual braces- those affixed to the back of the teeth instead of on the visible surfaces- that are custom-made to meet the needs of individual patients. The braces feature a sleek, individualized design that promotes comfort, performance and fit, according to Lingualcare, a 3M Unitek company that manufactures the braces. iBraces also can shave months off of a patient’s treatment time.
How? It’s all in the robotics, Eisenhuth said. To understand that part, it’s important to look at the entire process.
The Process
Getting iBraces starts with a consultation to determine if the patient is a good candidate for this treatment method.
“The good news is that iBraces are ideal for just about anyone,” Eisenhuth said.
They can be used on adults and children alike. As a rule of thumb, patients who are good candidates for traditional braces tend to be good candidates for iBraces, too.
Eisenhuth takes an impression of the patient’s teeth, which then is scanned by a computer and used to create a 3-D model of the teeth.
That model is used by a Lingualcare lab technician to create customized brackets and specialized archwires that are bent by a robot to specifically address each individual patient’s needs. Using the robot to bend the archwires enables them to be bent in an ideal fashion that promotes speedier movement of the teeth, Eisenhuth said.
Once this process is complete, the appliances are shipped back to the orthodontist for placement on the patient. This process typically takes about six weeks. Putting the actual braces on the patient takes less than one hour.
iBraces are the only completely-customized invisible fixed braces available on the market today, according to the Lingualcare Web site (http://www.lingualcare.com/patient/about.php).
“These braces have been a great addition to the practice,” Eisenhuth said. “Every patient who has been treated with them has enjoyed the results.”

Minneapolis Orthodontist Discusses Potential Orthodontic Problems Caused by Bad Habits in Babies and Toddlers
July 15, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – When it comes to quieting and calming babies and toddlers, there are several tricks of the trade that get the job done in the short term.
But in some cases, calming and coping mechanisms such as thumb sucking, using a pacifier or drinking from a bottle can lead to future orthodontic problems if used too frequently and for too long.
Sucking is a natural reflex in babies, according to the Colgate Web site (http://www.colgate.com/app/Colgate/US/OC/Information/OralHealthAtAnyAge/InfantsAndChildren/Infants/CanPacifiersBabyBottlesRuinMyBabysTeeth.cvsp). It also is an important part of a child’s development that serves to comfort children even when they begin eating regular food and no longer breast feed or drink from a bottle.
Thumb Sucking
Lots of children suck their thumbs because it feels good to them, said Minneapolis, Minnesota Orthodontist Dr. Trudy Bonvino, who serves as the orthodontist on staff at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics. They may suck their thumbs when they are sick, scared or tired.
The American Dental Association has stated that most children can suck their thumbs until they reach 3 or 4 years old without damaging their teeth. However, children who vigorously suck their thumbs and continue to do so beyond age 4 risk causing damage that will require orthodontic treatment to correct, said Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis, Minnesota braces expert who owns Cosmopolitan Orthodontics.
If children don’t eventually stop sucking their thumbs on their own, an orthodontist can install appliances that take away the pleasing sensation children get when sucking their thumbs.
Pacifiers
Parents who allow their children to use a pacifier during the first few years of life need not worry about causing future dental problems, according to a Mayo Clinic article on the topic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pacifiers/pr00067). It is the persistent use of a pacifier beyond about age 4 that can lead to long-term dental problems that include top front teeth that slant outward, lower front teeth that slant inward, misaligned jaws or narrowing of the roof of the mouth.
Eisenhuth recommends that parents give their children orthodontic pacifiers. These scientifically designed pacifiers support the shape of the jaws and palates in babies, according to www.gerber.com.
Baby Bottles
Because the desire to suck is innate, there are lots of children who continue to crave bottles long after their nutritional uses have ended, Eisenhuth said. But when parents put anything other than water in the bottle, they increase their child’s risk of developing tooth decay early in life.
“Sugars and carbohydrates in the mouth promote the growth of bacteria that can cause cavities,” she said. “Early decay is of particular concern because it can spread quickly and increase a child’s risk of enduring a lifetime of cavities and other dental problems.”
Early Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontists recommend that children see an orthodontist by age 7, when a child’s first adult molars typically have erupted, Eisenhuth said. By age 7, orthodontists can evaluate children to determine whether they have an overbite, an open bite, teeth crowding issues or a gummy smile. They also can correct many alignment problems that may have been caused by thumb sucking or extended pacifier and bottle use.
“Through early orthodontic treatment, we can address a variety of alignment and bite problems and prevent the need for braces down the road in many cases,” she said. “If we can’t prevent the need for braces, we almost always can reduce the length of time children will need to be in braces in the future when we get them involved in early treatment.”

St. Paul Orthodontist, MN Sponsors Children’s Activities at Lakeville July 4th Celebration
July 15, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, a new St. Paul, MN orthodontics practice, will sponsor the children’s activities at the city of Lakeville’s upcoming July 4th celebration.
This will be the first year participating in the event, but hopefully not the last, said St. Paul, MN Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who owns the practice.
Cosmopolitan Orthodontics’ sponsorship will provide inflatables for children to play in while awaiting the fireworks, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a St. Paul, MN Invisalign specialist who is the orthodontist on staff at the practice, which opened in June. This will be the first time inflatables will be a part of this 43-year-old event, said Patty Dexter, Lakeville’s recreation supervisor.
“Due to the economy, the success of the Panorama of Progress event is totally reliant on sponsorships from businesses,” Dexter said. “It’s run and facilitated by volunteers in the community and with the new sponsorship from Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, we are having inflatables at a Fourth of July event that we never could afford before.”
Dexter said she expects the inflatables to be a “huge draw.”
The idea for inflatables came about as a result of some collective brainstorming, she said. Representatives from Cosmopolitan Orthodontics wanted to focus on providing an activity geared toward children.
“I mentioned the July 4th event and almost simultaneously, we both mentioned inflatables,” Dexter said. “We had thought about doing this before, but for various reasons, we just haven’t. When we got this generous donation, we got approval to use (the inflatables) and off we went.”
The July 4th festivities are held at Lakeville North High School. The inflatables area opens at 6 p.m. There will be three inflatables so that children of all ages can enjoy them, Dexter said.
Another new element for this year’s event is a food drive to benefit the Community Action Council’s food shelves. Other activities include live music, a silent auction, concessions and a recognition ceremony for the armed forces, police departments and fire departments.
The fireworks, which are set to music, are designed by RES Specialty Pyrotechnics.
The city’s July 4th celebration kicks off a week of events known as the Panorama of Progress, or Pan-O-Prog. This year, the events run through July 11.
Pan-O-Prog’s creation was due in large part from the successful development of Lakeville's Airlake Industrial Park in 1963, according to the event’s Web site, www.panoprog.org. Community leaders believed the industrial park was the beginning growth in the area and wanted to create a way to celebrate that success. Pan-O-Prog was presented for the first time four years later in 1967.
The week-long celebration includes the Grand Parade, a classic car parade, pageants, tournaments, cookouts, crafts, street dances, a battle of the bands, talent shows and pet shows, among other activities.
